Bimatoprost is a man-made chemical that is similar to prostamide, a naturally occurring prostaglandin-like chemical that has different effects on different body tissues. For example, it has strong hypotensive (pressure-lowering) effects on the eyes. Careprost eye drops (0.03%) are also marketed in the US as Latisse. An obstruction in the mechanism that drains the eye fluid known as aqueous humor—which is continuously generated to maintain normal eye pressure—causes the buildup of pressure in the eye that is seen in glaucoma.
